Listening to Omah Lay – Safe Haven
Jude Hindan is a Nigerian photographer who comes from Benue State but he grew up in Lagos state, Nigeria.
Jude captures Portrait and Concept type of images; he has been doing this since 2020.

APH – When you started out photography, what was the one you wished you knew?
Jude Hindan – “Hmmm there are so many things but the most important was the fact that you are your own cheer, you are your own manager and your own market. All of these are all on you, no one would do it if you don’t. Especially in this genre of photography, no one really cares”.

APH – This was brilliantly said, you are your biggest fan first before anyone else. I love the concept behind every single one of your images, what gear do you use in capturing your photos?
Jude Hindan – “Thank you very much, well hahaaha, for now I currently take my photos with an iPhone X”.

APH – Wow, that’s so amazing but before the iPhone X what gear did you use during the genesis of your photography journey?
Jude Hindan – “I started out using a Tecno Camon C8 and that was a long time ago”

APH – Wow, I’m honestly impressed, like really impressed. There has been this debate for a long time in the photography world and its “Does the type of gear you use matter?”. So I’ll ask you seeing that you started out using a Tecno Camon C8 and now an iPhone X, do you think Gears matters in photography?
Jude Hindan – “Hhehehe. Some School of thought would say it doesn’t, they’d say what matters is the person behind the gear and some would say gear itself matters. But my own opinion is that Gear matters a whole lot!!!!

APH – Do you adjust your Camera settings to capture the perfect shot?
Jude Hindan – “Well using a phone isn’t so much of a manual thing when it comes to settings, the camera settings are all AI. But when I use a camera I’m all on the manual mode. I strive to keep my ISO at the lowest [at all times], I also keep a wide focus and my favorite shallow depth of field.

APH – Do you have any technique you use to capture emotions in your photos?
Jude Hindan – Hmmmm this is a hard one. I’m basically a surrealist type of photographer and it has been of great help in conveying the type of emotion I would want to be seen in my photographs.

APH – Out of all the photos you’ve brilliantly captured, do you have any favorites?
Jude Hindan – “Ouuuu!! I really do not have favorite pictures. Cause I love and believe in every collection. But I will share a few.”

APH – I am not going to lie, this set of images just made me fell deeply in love with your work. Do you have any one; artist, photographer or creative that has deeply influenced you?
Jude Hindan – “Hmmmm , I have been influenced by a couple of masters in the game. Photographers like Lexash, Alize Jireh, Ben Zack, Ebuka Mordi and directors like Christopher Nolan, James Gunn, Damien Chazelle, Robert Zemeekis”.

APH – Oh wow, this is amazing. I have to ask, do you ever get insecure or get dissatisfied after a particular shoot?.
Jude Hindan – “Yessss!! Isn’t it a mutual feeling with all creative. Most times after a session I get this side feeling of 2nd second guessing the work. It takes a while before I come to terms with it and let other persons see”.

APH – With your style of photography, how do you work with clients to make sure their vision is represented in the photos?
Jude Hindan – Uhnn first of, I make sure our communication is clear. I’d always make sure your wants are ascertained first before we proceed cause it’s the first and important thing.

APH – Good communication always brings out good results. We know in photography lighting matters, how do you handle difficult lighting situations?
Jude Hindan – “Hmmm this part, I try to squeeze in the best of the settings to adapt to the lighting. Faced situations like this couple of times, I usually panic and hurriedly bring out my phone to get some tips on goggle. But overtime I learnt the best ways to handle a bad lighting situation”.

APH – Do you stay current with photo technology and trends?
Jude Hindan – “Hmmm I don’t try to keep up with trends cause it’s a sloppy slide”.

APH – is there something you do to ensure that you deliver the highest quality photos to your clients?
Jude Hindan – “I do this by bringing enough creativity to every work”.

APH – Is there something you want to achieve in the world of photography?
Jude Hindan – “It’s simple. I just want to be GREAT”

APH – is it easy being a photographer in your country?
Jude Hindan – “It has not really been easy, trying to be consistent amidst all of the social limitations.

APH – Its been nice talking to you Jude, lastly do you have an advice to anyone starting out as a photographer?
Jude Hindan – “I’d say the market is saturated, so just stand out and most importantly be super different”.
